Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final: Huddersfield Town win promotion to the Premier League

29 May 2017

Huddersfield Town beat Reading 4-3 on penalties in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final to win promotion to the Premier League.

Danny Ward and Christopher Schindler were the shoot-out heroes as the goalkeeper saved Jordan Obita’s spot-kick, before the German defender coolly converted a penalty which was worth £170 million and a place in the top flight.

The victory completed what has been a remarkable season for David Wagner's men, which was the manager's first in charge of the Yorkshire club.

In what was a tense, goalless 90 minutes, Huddersfield’s Izzy Brown had the best opportunity in the ninth minute, which arrived not long after Michael Hefele missed a close-range header early on.

Nahki Wells’ cross-shot from the right-hand side took a deflection and fell to Brown at the back-post but, from point-blank range, the Chelsea loanee’s effort went an inch or two wide of the target.

It was more of the same in extra-time, with Terriers’ striker Wells having the only opening, but dragging his shot from inside the box harmlessly wide.

And so to penalties.

Yann Kermorgant, Danny Williams and Liam Kelly were all successful for the Reading, while Michael Hefele saw his penalty, which was Huddersfield’s second, saved, making it 3-2 to the Royals after three each.

But then Liam Moore blazed his over, Aaron Mooy found the net for Huddersfield, Ward saved from Obita and Schindler finished it, sending the Terriers into the top flight for the first time since 1972.
