Sky Bet EFL: Team of Midweek

16 March 2017

Twenty-five fixtures took place across Tuesday and Wednesday in the EFL, and we've selected some of the stand-out performers to make up our Team of Midweek.

Goalkeeper: Dean Lyness (Blackpool)

Blackpool maintained their push for the Sky Bet League Two Play-Offs with a 1-0 win over Stevenage, bringing an end to their opponents' nine-game undefeated streak.

Lyness did all that was asked of him in the win, with the highlight a superb close-range save to deny Jack King in the first half.

Defender: Greg Leigh (Bury)

Leigh grabbed his first Bury goal in the 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers, helping to earn three vital points in the bid for Sky Bet League One survival.

Along with a goal and a clean sheet, the full-back won the penalty which got the Shakers up and running.

Defender: Cian Bolger (Fleetwood Town)

After having their 18-match unbeaten sequence come to an end on Saturday, Fleetwood showed their character by bouncing back with a hard-earned win at Walsall.

Not for the first time, they had Bolger to thank – this is the third game in 2017 in which the centre-back has scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 away win.

Defender: Scott Harrison (Hartlepool United)

Hartlepool picked up a first away win since October on Tuesday night, with the three points lifting them nine points clear of the Sky Bet League Two drop zone.

The defensive performance at Cambridge United was outstanding, limiting the hosts to one shot on target, and Harrison cleared an effort off the line on a rare occasion when the U's did fashion a chance.

Midfielder: Sean McConville (Accrington Stanley)

It was quite a night for McConville, who set up three goals and scored two in Accrington's 5-0 demolition of Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

His goals came courtesy of two stunning late strikes, while Billy Kee and Matty Pearson profited from the winger's delivery.

Midfielder: Danny Rose (Portsmouth)

Portsmouth further cemented their place in the Sky Bet League Two top three with an emphatic 4-0 win at home to Grimsby Town.

Rose excelled in the centre of the park, producing a fine all-round display, capped off by scoring for the second successive game.

Midfielder: James Coppinger (Doncaster Rovers)

Doncaster maintained their unbeaten streak at the Keepmoat Stadium, with Coppinger inspiring a turnaround against Notts County.

Trailing by a goal, the Donny captain levelled things up, before crossing for Mathieu Baudry as the Sky Bet League Two leaders went on to win 3-1.

Midfielder: Filipe Morais (Bolton Wanderers)

Three assists in the Fleetwood win, surely Morais couldn't go one better as Bolton visited Gillingham? Wrong.

Adam Le Fondre, David Wheater and Mark Beevers all converted from the Portuguese winger's deliveries for the second game running, and Josh Vela joined the fun late on.

Forward: Lee Erwin (Oldham Athletic)

Oldham took another step towards safety with a 2-1 triumph over Oxford United, and Erwin's goals proved the key to victory.

The forward was in the right place at the right time to give the Latics the lead, before settling matters with a far-post header.

Forward: Reuben Reid (Exeter City)

After suffering back-to-back defeats, Exeter returned to winning ways with a convincing win against Cheltenham Town, and Reid bagged a brace in the 3-0 success.

The striker's first came from the penalty spot, before doubling his tally after the break after good work between himself and Jake Taylor.

Forward: Craig Mackail-Smith (Peterborough United)

No victory for Mackail-Smith on Tuesday night, but the Peterborough striker did play his part in an entertaining affair at Chesterfield.

After grabbing his 100th club goal at the weekend, he helped himself to two more as the two teams shared out six goals at the Proact Stadium.

Manager: Paul Lambert (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Wolves grabbed a second straight Sky Bet Championship success with a 2-1 midweek win at Brentford, and it came in the most dramatic of fashion with two late strikes.

Trailing by a goal with moments to go, Lambert's side turned it around, with substitutes Ben Marshall and Ivan Cavaleiro creating the goals in the last-gasp comeback.
