Sky Bet EFL: Midweek round-up

8 March 2017

Brighton & Hove Albion cut the gap at the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a comfortable 2-0 win at Rotherham United.

The Seagulls are now within three points of Newcastle United after the Magpies were held to a goalless draw away at fifth-placed Reading.

Huddersfield, who currently occupy third, halted Aston Villa's three-match winning run thanks to a Tommy Smith strike in a 1-0 win.

Leeds United remain fourth, but were denied victory late on away at Fulham. Garry Monk's side had taken an early lead, but Tom Cairney struck in stoppage time to rescue a point for the Cottagers.

Carlos Carvalhal's Sheffield Wednesday sit in the other Play-Off spot and they were also held to a 1-1 draw, sharing the points with Burton Albion at Hillsborough. That scoreline proved popular on Tuesday night, with the games at Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Bristol City also finishing one goal apiece.

At the wrong end of the table, Wigan Athletic picked up a vital victory at Birmingham City thanks to Dan Burn's first-half strike, while Wolverhampton Wanderers' five-game losing streak was stopped with a goalless draw at Ipswich Town.

Elsewhere, it was a good night for west London duo QPR and Brentford. The R's defeated Barnsley 2-1 at Loftus Road, while Lasse Vibe helped Brentford to a third win in four games, grabbing a brace in a 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest.

Brentford made it three wins from their last four with victory over Nottingham Forest. Lasse Vibe netted a brace for the Bees as they defeated their hosts 3-2.

Scunthorpe United travelled to the Valley to face Charlton Athletic in the knowledge that a win would move them back into second place, but it was not to be. Tony Watt's last-gasp penalty sealed a 2-1 win for the Addicks, ending the club's eight-game winless run.

In the evening's other match-up, Walsall defeated Chesterfield 1-0, with Scott Laird's goal sending the Saddlers up to eighth in the standings.
