Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

26 March 2017

Bolton Wanderers closed the gap on Sky Bet League One leaders Sheffield United by beating Shrewsbury Town 2-0.

The Trotters now trail the Blades by just four points, after the table-toppers could only draw 1-1 at Oldham Athletic.

The victory for Phil Parkinson's men - their fifth on the spin - allowed them to move further away from third-placed Fleetwood Town, with the Cod Army sharing a goalless draw with Bury.

In the early match, Millwall failed to move into the Play-Offs as they lost 1-0 at Swindon Town, and Southend United increased their grip on sixth by seeing off AFC Wimbledon 2-0 in their 3pm kick-off.

It was the perfect present for Blues manager Phil Brown, who was celebrating four years in charge of the club.

That aforementioned win for Swindon was one of only two recorded by teams in the bottom half of the table - Coventry City were the other lowly victors, as they overcame Bristol Rovers 1-0 to record back-to-back triumphs.

On Sunday, Scunthorpe United leapfrogged Bradford City into fourth place, with Matt Crooks' late goal sealing a 3-2 victory in a topsy-turvy encounter in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Sunday afternoon saw Doncaster Rovers take on Plymouth Argyle live on Sky Sports in a top-of-the-table clash, and the second-placed Pilgrims emerged victorious.

Sonny Bradley's second-half header proved decisive, ending Rovers' unbeaten home record and closing the gap on the leaders to just three points.

The majority of action took place on Saturday, when Blackpool climbed into the Play-Off places and up to fifth in Sky Bet League Two as they saw off Hartlepool United 2-1.

The Tangerines took advantage of Carlisle United's continuing slump - the Cumbrians lost 2-0 at home to Crewe to make it seven winless matches.

The other three teams in the Play-Off places all failed to win. Luton Town lost at Colchester United, while Stevenage and Exeter City both drew, with the latter scoring three goals in the last few minutes to draw 3-3 with Yeovil Town.

Portsmouth strengthened their grip on third by beating Newport County 2-1, and the other side in the bottom two alongside the Exiles, Leyton Orient, were also defeated.

Elsewehere, John Akinde scored two in two minutes to guide Barnet to victory over Cheltenham Town, and Shola Ameobi netted the only goal of the game to earn Notts County three points at Wycombe Wanderers.
