Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

18 March 2017

Sky Bet Championship leaders Newcastle United were held away at Birmingham City, but maintained top spot after Leeds United beat Brighton & Hove Albion in the late kick-off.

Chris Wood was at the double for Leeds, scoring his 23rd and 24th league goals of the season to deny Brighton a return to the summit.

The Sky Bet Championship action kicked off with two local derbies at lunchtime, with Blackburn Rovers hosting Preston North End and Nottingham Forest taking on Derby County - where managers Mark Warburton and Gary Rowett took charge for the first time.

Both games finished up 2-2, with Aiden McGeady rescuing a late point for Preston, while Daniel Pinillos also secured a draw in stoppage time for Forest.

An eight-goal thriller at the Pirelli Stadium went the way of Brentford, as Burton dropped to 21st and within a place of the relegation zone, while Wolverhampton Wanderers moved five points clear of the drop with a 3-1 victory at Play-Off chasing Fulham.

There were also wins for Norwich City, Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa on Matchday 38.
