Checkatrade Trophy Final: Wembley showdown among top five attended matches in Europe

31 March 2017

The Checkatrade Trophy Final will be among the top five highest-attended matches in Europe this weekend!

More than 70,000 supporters are expected at Wembley Stadium to watch Coventry City versus Oxford United, and the competition's attendance record at the New Wembley is set to be broken.

In Europe this weekend, only the crowds at Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Hertha Berlin can beat Sunday's anticipated attendance.

The Final has always had a habit of drawing large crowds, with nearly 500,000 supporters combined watching the last nine finals since its return to Wembley in 2008.

But Sunday’s match will be just the third time in the past 16 years that the attendance has surpassed the 70,000 mark.

Coventry City defender Jordan Turnbull, who played at Wembley for Swindon Town in 2015, cannot wait to play in front of an ‘electric’ atmosphere.

“It is going to be a fantastic day for both clubs,” he said. “It is a fantastic achievement to reach Wembley and the noise will be incredible.

“The atmosphere will be electric with so many people in the stadium and it would be great if we could win the trophy.”

The Checkatrade Trophy is not the only cup final taking place in Europe this weekend. Across the English Channel, the French equivalent of the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup), the Coupe de la Ligue, will be played at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Ligue 1 heavyweights AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain will meet in front of 59,500 fans, more than 10,000 shy of the Checkatrade Trophy Final attendance.

In fact, Sunday’s attendance will be higher than the major cup finals in Spain, Italy, Holland and Portugal in 2016.

The Copa del Rey Final between FC Barcelona and Sevilla attracted 54,907 fans whilst the Coppa Italia Final was watched by 67,123 people as Juventus beat AC Milan.

The presence of more than 70,000 supporters at Wembley is testament to the competition’s continuing appeal as both teams vie to win the Checkatrade Trophy.
