Aiden McGeady named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month

10 March 2017

Preston North End winger Aiden McGeady has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for February.

It was the month in which McGeady found his feet in English football.

Superbly gifted and able to drift past players at will, he scored three fine individual goals – two against Brentford – and contributed four assists as well.

Preston manager Simon Grayson said: "I think some of his performances with the ball have been outstanding, he's had the end product as well and he's got the goals that his performances have warranted this year.

"I think he prefers to recognise what the other players have done for him as well, the players who have grafted, got him the ball and helped along the way to contribute to this award.

"It's great for him, I think it's been fully warranted given the month of February, he had a really outstanding month and we are fortunate to have him here.

"Let's hope in another month we are talking about him winning another award but we are very pleased for him and I am proud to be his manager.”

McGeady said: “It's a great accolade to get, to see your form recognised over the past month.

"I feel like I've been pretty consistent all season but obviously a few goals and a few assists grab the headlines but the main thing is that the team has been doing well.

"I'm enjoying my football again. Just playing games again really, I had sort of forgotten what I could play like because I hadn't really played that much.

"It's a good environment to play my football in and I'm loving it.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “It’s fair to say that Aiden hasn't had it easy since making the move south of the border, following largely unsuccessful spells at Everton and Sheffield Wednesday, but his form in February was exemplary.

“His creativity, trickery and goals have coincided with an upturn in Preston’s form and wins against Birmingham, Brentford and QPR catapulted them up the league.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “Aiden McGeady has only started 20 matches in a season once since leaving his first club Celtic in 2010.

“In his new role at Preston he has had a run of games since November and has really started to flourish.

“February was an unbeaten month for the men from Deepdale and McGeady was the heart and soul of that run, bagging three goals and several assists."

The judging panel for the Sky Bet Player of the Month comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, EFL Communications Director Mark Rowan, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.
