Fulham's Tom Cairney, Bolton Wanderers’ Sammy Ameobi and Stevenage's Fraser Franks are Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month winners for December 2016.
Tom Cairney – (Fulham) v Wolves
Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney is the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month winner for December, after receiving 54% of the public vote.
It was a goal straight off the training ground. Stefan Johansen guided his free-kick on to the left foot of Cairney, whose impeccably timed volley flew past Wolves keeper Harry Burgoyne.
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit, Don Goodman, said: “What can you really say when you see a goal like that? It’s a remarkable strike, clean as a whistle and a real thing of beauty.
“The most impressive thing is that technically, it is a very difficult volley to pull off but Cairney strikes it to perfection.”
Cairney said: “It was a great moment and a great goal - the best I’ve scored in my career and to have won this award; I’m happy and hopefully I can score another one soon.”
Cairney beat off competition from Burton Albion’s Jamie Ward and Bristol City’s Luke Freeman.
Sammy Ameobi – (Bolton Wanderers) v Gillingham
Bolton Wanderers striker Sammy Ameobi is the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month winner for December, after receiving 68% of the public vote.
Picking the ball up in midfield, Ameobi strode forward, then stepped inside on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit, Don Goodman, said: “We all know the ability that this man possesses and it is highlighted beautifully within this goal.
“The Gillingham defence backed off and paod the ultimate price as Ameobi hit a pure, unstoppable strike into the top corner."
Ameobi, now back at parent club Newcastle United, said: “It’s a great honour to receive the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award and I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for me.
“I enjoyed it at Bolton Wanderers and this goal is certainly one of the memorable moments which sticks out when I look back at my recent time there.
“I just remember picking the ball up on the right and things seemed to open up for me as I began to cut inside along the edge of the area.
"I was able to hit it sweetly with my left foot and it was a great feeling to see it fly into the top corner to wrap up what was a great win for us at home.”
Ameobi beat off competition from Rochdale’s Ian Henderson and Peterborough’s Gwion Edwards.
Fraser Franks – (Stevenage) v Doncaster Rovers
Stevenage defender Fraser Franks is the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for December, after receiving 48% of the public vote.
A pinpoint angled pass from Michael Tonge was controlled on his knee and on the run by Franks, who then struck an unstoppable volley inside the near post.
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit, Don Goodman, said: “Brilliant movement, brilliant control on the thigh and a brilliant volley at the end of it - this goal had the lot!
“Franks isn’t a prolific scorer, with this only his second league goal this season, but it’s sure to be one he remembers for a long time.”
Franks said: “I’m delighted to win the award and would like to thank everybody that voted. I don’t get many with my feet so I’ll take this one!”
Franks beat off competition from Carlisle United’s Shaun Brisley and Portsmouth’s Kal Naismith.
