A Kane Hemmings hat-trick helped Oxford United book their place in the Checkatrade Trophy Quarter-Finals on Tuesday night.Last year’s finalists trailed Scunthorpe United early on, but Marvin Johnson’s equaliser restored parity before Hemmings stole the show in a 4-1 win.
Luton Town’s Jack Marriott and Swansea City’s Oli McBurnie were among the goals too, both bagging braces to help their clubs advance.
Marriott’s double came in the Hatters’ 4-0 win over Chesterfield, while McBurnie scored a late second to help Swansea City U21 overcome Wolverhampton U21 by two goals to one.
Pat Hoban also got his name on the scoresheet twice, scoring a pair of late headers as Mansfield Town knocked out Oldham Athletic.
Coventry City ran out 3-0 victors against Brighton & Hove Albion U21 with youngsters George Thomas and Ryan Haynes among the goalscorers, while Yeovil Town eased past 10-man Reading U21 4-2.
There was one tie which needed penalties to settle matters, and that was at Bloomfield Road where Blackpool and Wycombe Wanderers battled out a 1-1 draw.
The Chairboys converted all five of their spot-kicks to put the pressure on Will Aimson, and his crucial penalty struck the post to send the hosts out of the competition.
The final match of the round saw Bradford City beat Cheltenham Town thanks to a Jordy Hiwula strike.
