Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

25 February 2017

Brighton & Hove Albion are back on top of the Sky Bet Championship following their impressive 3-0 win over Reading.

Goals from Sam Baldock, Jamie Murphy and Anthony Knockaert ensured the Seagulls' took full advantage of Newcastle United's draw earlier in the day.

The Magpies went 2-0 down to Bristol City and did fight back to level, but could only salvage a point at St. James’ Park.

Huddersfield Town were also held, by Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, with Marley Watkins cancelling out Michael Hefele’s earlier effort for the in-form Terriers.

Aston Villa’s winless run of nine games came to an end with a 1-0 triumph over Derby County thanks to James Chester’s goal.

Jota hit a hat-trick for Brentford to help the Bees past Rotherham United, clinching the match ball with two stoppage-time strikes.

Preston North End also triumphed, coming from behind to defeat QPR 2-1, while there were draws in the games at Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic.

Birmingham City were the only winners in Friday night’s two matches, defeating West Midlands foes Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Burton Albion and Blackburn Rovers shared the spoils.

In Saturday's early kick-off, Leeds United won both the Yorkshire bragging rights and a vital three points in the push for Play-Offs with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

On Sunday, meanwhile, the latest East Anglian Derby ended level, with Norwich and Ipswich battling out a 1-1 draw.

A Billy Sharp double extended Sheffield United’s lead at the top of Sky Bet League One.

The Blades skipper’s double helped his side to three points against fellow promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers, who dropped to fourth after the day’s action.

Fleetwood Town were the team to leapfrog them after the Cod Army eased to a 3-0 win against Northampton Town, extending their unbeaten league run to 17 games in the process.

Oxford swept aside Chesterfield, running out 4-0 winners on the road thanks in no small part to Conor McAleny’s hat-trick.

Alex Jones struck against former club Port Vale as Bradford City also emerged victorious away from home, while second-placed Scunthorpe United were held to a 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers.

Millwall had two late chances to pick up three points, but were held to a goalless draw after Oldham goalkeeper Connor Ripley saved two stoppage-time penalties from Lee Gregory.

There were also away wins for Swindon Town — 3-1 at rock-bottom Coventry City — and Bury, with Ryan Lowe the man on target to see off Charlton Athletic.

Ady Pennock got off the mark as Gillingham boss as his side edged past 10-man Southend United 2-1, courtesy of Josh Wright’s double.

Elsewhere, MK Dons beat Shrewsbury by the same scoreline, AFC Wimbledon defeated Walsall, and Peterborough United were 3-1 winners in a game which saw three men dismissed.

None of the top three were victorious on another exciting day of Sky Bet League Two action.

Doncaster Rovers were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Accrington Stanley, while closest contenders Plymouth Argyle also drew, sharing the spoils at Luton Town.

The Hatters dropped to fifth as a result of that point, following Portsmouth’s emphatic 3-0 win at third-placed Carlisle United

Crawley Town also secured a 2-1 win after Josh Payne’s fine free-kick capped a comeback at Wycombe Wanderers.

Towards the wrong end of the table, Cheltenham picked up a crucial three points at Leyton Orient to climb to 19th, while the spoils were shared between Notts County and Yeovil Town.
