Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

Newcastle United retained top spot with a Monday-night win in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Magpies took to the field knowing that three points against Aston Villa would take them back to the summit, after Brighton initially replaced them with a weekend triumph.

A first-half goal from Yoan Gouffran and a Henri Lansbury own goal secured the three points, inflicting a fifth successive defeat on Villa.

Brighton's Saturday success came at Barnsley, where Sam Baldwock was the two-goal hero in a 2-0 victory.

Sheffield Wednesday increased their cushion over the pack chasing the Play-Offs thanks a to a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest.

That’s four wins on the spin for the Owls, who now lead seventh-placed Norwich City by seven points, after the Canaries fell to a defeat at Burton Albion. Michael Kightly (pictured) netted the Brewers’ winner.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City thumped rock-bottom Rotherham United 5-0, and QPR put four past Birmingham City.

The games at Ipswich and Wigan Athletic ended level.

The battle between the top two ended level in Sky Bet League One, with Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United battling out a 1-1 draw.

Third-placed Bolton Wanderers also drew, in their match against Bradford City, who are fifth.

Fleetwood Town capitalised on what was a big day at the top of the division, beating MK Dons to close the gap on the leading three. That’s now 16 games undefeated for the Cod Army.

Southend United led twice against Northampton Town but could only draw 2-2, although they moved into the Play-Off places.

At the other end, Bury moved out of the bottom four courtesy of a win in Lee Clark’s first match in charge - a 2-1 success at Chesterfield - while rock-bottom Coventry City beat Gillingham 2-1.

Elsewhere, Rochdale and Charlton Athletic shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Alfie May rescued a point for leaders Doncaster Rovers as they failed to win for the fourth match on the spin.

May’s goal saw Rovers draw 1-1 with Luton Town but they still lead Plymouth Argyle by three points.

The Pilgrims drew 1-1 at Hartlepool United, while third-placed Carlisle United were the only winners in the top eight, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1.

Grimsby Town were the next highest-placed winners, with the Mariners, who sit 12th, seeing off Mansfield Town 3-0 in an impressive performance.

Cambridge United secured the most scintillating result in the division, coming from 2-0 down to beat rock-bottom Newport County.

Talking of the bottom, there were big victories for Cheltenham Town, Notts County and Accrington Stanley, who all climbed above Hartlepool.
