Neither of the top two, Newcastle United or Brighton & Hove Albion, managed to pick up three points, giving the chasing group behind the chance to close the gap.Newcastle drew 2-2 at Norwich City despite going ahead through Ayoze Perez after 23 seconds, while the Seagulls shared the spoils with Ipswich Town.
Tommy Smith’s last-gasp winner helped Huddersfield Town to a 3-2 triumph over Rotherham United, and Reading recorded the same scoreline at home to Brentford.
Chris Wood continued his goalscoring form as Leeds United edged past Bristol City 2-1, and Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday mirrored that scoreline against Blackburn Rovers thanks to Vincent Sasso’s double.
Preston North End continued the trend, overcoming Birmingham City by the odd goal in three, while Fulham emerged victorious in a five-goal thriller against Nottingham Forest.
There was another entertaining encounter at Pride Park where Derby County led Cardiff City 2-0, but the Bluebirds triumphed 4-3 thanks to a last-minute penalty from Joe Ralls.
Barnsley and Wigan Athletic were also victors on the road, winning at Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively.

Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United were held to goalless draws on Matchday 32 of the Sky Bet League One season.
The division’s top two drew away at Bristol Rovers and at home to Walsall respectively, with Bolton Wanderers and Fleetwood Town taking full advantage.
The Trotters were 1-0 victors against Rochdale, while the Cod Army fought back from behind to beat fellow promotion-chasers Bradford City.
Sixth-placed Millwall defeated Port Vale 2-0, while there were wins for Southend United and Peterborough United to keep the pair within touching distance of the Play-Off places.
At the opposite end, Oldham Athletic grabbed a second straight victory to move them up to 19th, while Northampton Town heaped more misery on Swindon Town with a 2-1 Sixfields success.
The games at AFC Wimbledon, Bury and Gillingham all finished level to round off the midweek action.

The top two in Sky Bet League Two suffered defeat on Tuesday night, with Doncaster Rovers falling to high-flying Carlisle United.
The Cumbrians sit third in the table, and ran out 2-0 winners against the league leaders thanks to Nicky Adams and a Niall Mason own goal.
Plymouth Argyle looked in control against Leyton Orient, but conceded two late goals to fall to a shock 3-2 loss at Home Park.
Exeter City were also left shellshocked after a late collapse, with Notts County striking twice in stoppage time to rescue a point at Meadow Lane.
Luton Town and Portsmouth both won at home without conceding, while Mansfield Town retained their place in the top seven after a late equaliser from Yoann Arquin earned the Stags a 4-4 draw with Accrington Stanley.
Jimmy Smith hit a hat-trick for Crawley Town as they won at Colchester United, with Barnet also away winners courtesy of Tom Champion’s second-half goal at Morecambe.
There were home triumphs for Crewe Alexandra and Stevenage, while the spoils were shared in matches at Newport County and Yeovil Town.
