Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

2 February 2017

Brentford cruised to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in Sky Sports’ live televised Sky Bet Championship fixture on Tuesday night.

Lasse Vibe hit two goals in front of the cameras, either side of a Nico Yennaris effort, to hand the Bees a first ever win over their opponents.

Off the pitch, however, the Villans would later celebrate with the #DeadlineDay signing of Brentford’s top scorer, Scott Hogan.

That wasn’t the only 3-0 win of the night, with a dominant first-half display seeing Derby County ease past Ipswich Town. Craig Bryson, Tom Ince and Darren Bent were on target to send the Rams into the top six.

John Swift’s second-half goal gave Reading a third straight win and left Gianfranco Zola still searching for a first triumph as Birmingham City boss.

Britt Assombalonga was at the double as Nottingham Forest defeated Rotherham United 2-0, which was the same scoreline Cardiff City recorded against Preston North End. A Peter Whittingham penalty and a solo strike from birthday boy Kenneth Zohore secured maximum points.

Elsewhere, David Edwards scored twice as Wolverhampton Wanderers won 3-1 at Barnsley, who had debutant Alex Mowatt dismissed in the second half, while Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday shared the spoils.

On Wednesday night, Newcastle United twice threw away their lead to draw 2-2 at home to Ian Holloway's QPR and miss out on the chance to regain top spot. The R's late equaliser came courtesy of Ciaran Clark putting through his own net.

There was late drama at Ewood Park too, where Leeds United needed a late strike from fan-favourite Pontus Jansson to come away with three points.

In Wednesday's other fixture, Fulham were 2-0 victors away to Burton Albion.

The only midweek action in Sky Bet League One came on Wednesday night when Walsall travelled south to London to take on Millwall.

Three points for the hosts would have taken them within touching distance of a Play-Off position, but it was not to be as the two sides played out a goalless draw at the Den.

Exeter City made it six wins on the spin and 11 games unbeaten as they climbed to fourth in the Sky Bet League Two table.

David Wheeler netted his sixth goal in as many games to open the scoring as they defeated Wycombe Wanderers 4-2, leapfrogging the Chairboys in the process.

The Grecians also moved above Luton Town, who suffered a surprise defeat at home to lowly Cheltenham Town.

William Boyle and Jack Barthram gave the Robins a two-goal cushion, which was halved by Isaac Vassell, but Billy Waters sealed the victory before the Hatters grabbed a late consolation.

Last but not least, Yeovil Town ended their four-game wait for a goal at Huish Park with two goals in three second-half minutes against Plymouth Argyle.

Nathan Smith and Alex Lacey grabbed the goals, and they proved enough to see off Plymouth Argyle despite Jakub Sokolik’s late consolation.
