Exeter City: 12 unbeaten – Plymouth Argyle stand in the way of more history

9 February 2017

It was during Season 1986/87 when Exeter City recorded their best ever unbeaten run of 13 matches.

Fast forward 30 years, they stand on the brink of equalling that record this weekend when they visit Plymouth Argyle for the latest Devon Derby.

Their 12-game undefeated sequence features two draws, nine clean sheets and 10 wins, including victories in all of their last seven outings.

The Grecians' scintillating Sky Bet League Two stretch

22nd Nov: Leyton Orient 0-1 Exeter
26th Nov: Exeter 0-0 Luton
10th Dec: Cheltenham 1-3 Exeter
17th Dec: Exeter 2-0 Mansfield
26th Dec: Yeovil 0-0 Exeter
31st Dec: Newport 1-4 Exeter
2nd Jan: Exeter 4-0 Leyton Orient
14th Jan: Grimsby 0-3 Exeter
21st Jan: Exeter 3-0 Colchester
28th Jan: Portsmouth 0-1 Exeter
31st Jan: Exeter 4-2 Wycombe
4th Feb: Exeter 4-0 Crewe

What's more impressive, Paul Tisdale's men were bottom of the league when that run started on 22nd November. They now sit fourth.

Record-breaker

David Wheeler has been crucial to their seven successive wins with the midfielder finding the net in each of those games.

His latest strike, against Crewe, saw him become the first Grecians player to find the net in seven consecutive matches, surpassing the six-game streaks of Henry Poulter (1933/34) and Roderick Williams (1936/37).
