Checkatrade Trophy: Coventry City advance to Wembley

8 February 2017

Coventry City became the first team to book their place in April’s Checkatrade Trophy Final courtesy of a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

The Sky Blues got off to a flying start in the semi-final when Stuart Beavon controlled a pull-back and struck a low effort into the far corner, aided by a slight deflection.

George Thomas doubled the advantage not long after with a fine strike, bringing down a cross on his chest before firing beyond Jamal Blackman in the Chairboys’ goal.

That’s how it stayed until the break, but substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa lashed home a fierce shot 10 minutes into the second half, setting up an enthralling climax.

However, Wycombe could not force the equaliser and it was Coventry who were celebrating their spot in the tournament showpiece.

Luton Town host Oxford United in the other semi-final for the opportunity to face Coventry at the national stadium on Sunday 2nd April 2017.
