Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal departs the Owls

24 December 2017

Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday stay is over, following last Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at home to Middlesbrough.

The defeat left the club sitting 15th in the Sky Bet Championship, 11 points outside of the play-off places and just eight above the bottom three. The fixture also led to the dismissal of Boro boss Garry Monk.

Carvalhal arrived at Hillsborough in the summer of 2015 and guided the Owls to two successive play-off campaigns. The first resulted in defeat at Wembley to Hull City, while they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Yorkshire foes Huddersfield Town last time around.

The Portuguese coach said in a statement: “Now is the time to focus on the wonderful experiences I have enjoyed at Sheffield Wednesday and the friends I have made.

“The fans are fantastic, unbelievable, and I would like to thank them very much. They have given me some memories that I will always cherish.

“I would like to thank all the players for the way they have given me nothing less than 100% support and commitment.
