Player of the Month: Charlie Mulgrew - Blackburn Rovers

8 December 2017

Sky Bet League One Player of the Month, Blackburn Rovers' Charlie Mulgrew.

Blackburn Rovers' Charlie Mulgrew has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for November.

Mulgrew led by example as Rovers rampaged through November. Not content to play a pivotal role at the back, he shouldered the responsibility to convert two penalties among his four goals, which also included a delightful free-kick at Blackpool.

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray said: “Both as a footballer and as a man, Charlie Mulgrew is a very impressive individual.

“He's someone I knew well from my time in Scotland. His qualities as a player are second to none. His left foot can do a lot of damage from set-pieces and in open play.

“He brings human and leadership qualities to the job, he leads the team with his voice and mannerisms, and takes control of certain situations, as we have seen in recent games with the penalties.

“He works like a trojan every day. He throws his body on the line in every five-a-side game we play. He trains every day as if it’s his last and it’s a great credit to him that he works like that. We're delighted he's with us. We need to keep him fit and motivated and the points will keep totting up."

Mulgrew said: “Delighted, I didn’t even give it a thought to be honest, so surprised and very proud to be given this award.

“We’ve played a lot of good games this year but even the ones we’ve won, we wanted to do better. Everybody’s determined to win games and pushing for the same thing.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Blackburn’s captain fantastic has lead by example in November and his goals from centre-back helped Rovers to maximum points.

“His vast experience is proving invaluable for Tony Mowbray in steadying the ship and building a team capable of fighting for promotion this term.”

Sky Bet EFL trader Mikey Mumford said: “Scoring four times from the back is a very respectable return in a whole campaign never mind in a single month. But that is exactly what Blackburn skipper Charlie Mulgrew managed as he led his side by example to help Rovers march up the Sky Bet League One table.

“Those goals included two penalties and a free kick as Blackburn racked up 13 goals in November and the Scotland international has certainly displayed his aptitude for finding the net from a dead-ball situation this term.

“He trails only Marcus Antonsson and Dominic Samuel in Blackburn scoring charts and his influence at both ends of pitch will be invaluable if his side are to gain promotion.”

The judging panel for the Sky Bet Player of the Month comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Communications Director Mark Rowan, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet EFL trader Mikey Mumford.
