Friday night round-up: Wolves and Colchester United claim victory

15 December 2017

Two Friday night fixtures got the weekend up and running, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Colchester United running out winners on an entertaining evening.

In the Championship, table-topping Wolves travelled to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, seeking a seventh win in eight games.

Ruben Neves grabbed the only goal, coolly slotting home from outside the box and into the bottom corner to give Nuno’s men a first-half lead.

It was a lead they never looked like relinquishing, and the Owls’ task was made even harder with the late dismissal of Morgan Fox.

The visitors saw the game out, with Neves named Man of the Match for his display in front of the Sky Sports cameras, sending Wolves seven points clear ahead of the Saturday action.

There was entertainment aplenty in League Two’s solitary fixture, which saw Colchester United emerge victorious in a five-goal thriller at Swindon Town.

The hosts led through Kaiyne Woolery, but were stopped in their tracks in first-half stoppage time when Frankie Kent struck the equaliser.

A Mikael Mandron header turned the game on its head, and then the drama really kicked in. Kellan Gordon equalised for the hosts just moments after coming off the bench, but just three minutes later, the U’s were in front once again.

Sammie Szmodics fired home his 10th goal of the campaign, securing maximum points and seeing John McGreal’s men up to fifth.
