Preview: Sky Bet EFL Matchday 2

11 August 2017

After a midweek programme of Carabao Cup matches, the EFL returns this weekend for its second round of fixtures.

Here’s our Matchday 2 preview…

Maiden meeting for the Tigers and the Brewers

Saturday’s clash between Hull City and Burton Albion at the KCOM Stadium will be the first time both sides have ever met.

Nigel Clough’s Brewers began their second season in the Sky Bet Championship with a narrow home defeat at the hands of Cardiff City last time out, but they responded immediately - picking up a Carabao Cup victory over Oldham Athletic on Wednesday.

Hull’s campaign got off to a positive start, as they came from behind to take a point from their encounter with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Warburton returns to Griffin Park

Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton makes his first return to Brentford as an opposition manager this weekend, when he takes his Nottingham Forest side to face the Bees.

Warburton’s team have made a perfect start to the new season, winning both their fixtures against Millwall and Shrewsbury Town respectively.

Dean Smith watched his players bounce back from their opening day loss at Sheffield United, as the Bees earned an extra-time triumph over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Around the grounds

There’s an evening kick-off in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the Riverside on Saturday evening, with Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough outfit taking on Sheffield United, in what is the two teams’ first meeting since 2011.

Reading and Fulham clash at the Madejski Stadium in what is a repeat of last season’s play-off semi-final. Reading won the second leg on home turf, booking a place in the showpiece final at Wembley in the process.

Two of 2016/17’s promoted sides face off also, with Bolton Wanderers making the trip to the Den, where they’ll take on Millwall. The Trotters won both encounters in Sky Bet League One last term.

The latest round of Sky Bet Championship fixtures is brought to a close by Norwich City and Sunderland, who’ll take to the field on Sunday afternoon at Carrow Road.

Tangerines and Dons’ first league meeting in over a decade

Blackpool and Milton Keynes Dons’ last competitive fixture was back in 2010, when the latter prevailed in a seven-goal thriller in the League Cup.

They haven't clashed in EFL action since 2006 however, with the Dons again emerging victors, as they took all three points in a 3-0 win at Stadium MK.

This weekend’s match takes place at Bloomfield Road, with both sides aiming for their first points of the season after opening day defeats.

Greater Manchester derby at the DW

Wigan Athletic’s first home encounter back in Sky Bet League One sees them clash with Bury at the DW Stadium.

Both clubs enjoyed winning starts to the new campaign last time out, with the Latics and the Shakers each kicking off 2017/18 with 1-0 successes.

It’s their first meeting in just over a year, and Sunday’s hosts cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory on that occasion.

Around the grounds

There’s plenty of other interesting match-ups throughout the rest of the division too, as newly promoted Doncaster Rovers travel to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers.

Rochdale and Scunthorpe United provided an entertaining festive clash at Spotland back in December, and that’s where they meet this Saturday.

Charlton Athletic have made a 100 percent start to the season with wins in the EFL and Carabao Cup, and Karl Robinson’s men visit Plymouth Argyle for the two clubs’ first encounter for over six years.

Elsewhere, Fleetwood Town, Portsmouth, Bradford City, Peterborough United, Southend United and Shrewsbury Town are on the road looking to build on their winning starts.

Accrington's Cup heroes back in action

After securing their spot in Carabao Cup Round Two during the week, Accrington Stanley now travel to Huish Park to face Yeovil Town on Saturday.

That cup triumph came against Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End, and the visitors will seek to use it as momentum going into their meeting with the Glovers.

Yeovil themselves will be keen to kickstart their own campaign after last week's 8-2 loss at the hands of Luton Town, but following an impressive display in their 1-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers during the week, there’s room for optimism for Darren Way and his squad.

Mariners and Sky Blues clash after 14 years

Grimsby Town’s Sky Bet League Two season started with a 3-1 away victory over Chesterfield, and the Mariners take on another recently relegated side this weekend.

2003 was the most recent clash between Town and Coventry City, with the Sky Blues taking maximum points that day.

Russell Slade was in charge of Coventry for 16 games last season prior to his dismissal, and both teams are looking to take their points tally to six after triumphing on the first weekend.

Around the grounds

Mansfield Town host the EFL’s newest outfit, Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, after both started off with a 2-2 draw last weekend.

Lincoln City’s return to the fourth tier also began in the same fashion, and they're back on home turf in the EFL for the first time since May 2011, when they were relegated. Morecambe are the visitors.

The standout result of Matchday 1 came at Kenilworth Road, where Luton overcame Yeovil Town by an 8-2 scoreline. Barnet is the destination for Nathan Jones’ team this weekend.

Elsewhere, recently relegated Port Vale and Swindon Town return home after wins on the road, with the latter taking on Exeter City – another side with three points under their belt after the first matchday.
