Sky Bet EFL: Midweek round-up

5 April 2017

Sheffield Wednesday returned to the Sky Bet Championship top six, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Rotherham United in the South Yorkshire derby live on Sky Sports.

Steven Fletcher’s brace handed the Owls victory, and they returned to the Play-Off places after Fulham fell to defeat at Derby County — David Nugent hitting a hat-trick for the Rams.

Brighton & Hove Albion won 3-1 against Birmingham City to go top for 24 hours, but Newcastle United's Wednesday night win over Burton Albion saw the Magpies retain pole position.

Reading recorded a third straight win, overcoming Blackburn Rovers 3-1, a result which kept Tony Mowbray’s men inside the bottom three.

However, they didn’t lose ground with Nottingham Forest and Bristol City both suffering losses — Forest losing 1-0 at Wolves and the Robins humbled by Preston North End in a five-goal thrashing.

Ipswich Town put three past struggling Wigan Athletic without reply, while there were also home wins for Aston Villa and Brentford, who beat QPR and Leeds United respectively.

Elsewhere, Barnsley and Cardiff City played out a goalless draw.

In Wednesday night's other fixture, Huddersfield Town returned to third with a 3-0 win over Norwich City in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Bolton Wanderers kept pace with Sheffield United towards the top of Sky Bet League One, courtesy of Mark Beevers’ late winner at Southend United.

The defender’s fifth goal in seven games handed the Trotters victory, and the result enabled Millwall to move level on points with the Shrimpers in sixth position, after they won at Shrewsbury Town.

Elsewhere, Milton Keynes Dons ran out 2-0 winners at Charlton Athletic, while Rochdale scored three first-half goals to ease past 10-man Port Vale.

On Wednesday night, Sheffield United continued their fine form, defeating Coventry City 2-0 and moving six points clear at the summit.

If Fleetwood Town had have lost at Oxford United, it would have secured the Blades' promotion, but it was not to be. The Cod Army were 3-1 victors over Michael Appleton's men at the Kassam Stadium.
