Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

24 April 2017

Brighton & Hove Albion failed to secure the Sky Bet Championship crown after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Norwich City on Matchday 44.

Alex Pritchard played a pivotal role for the Canaries, with two efforts striking the woodwork before deflecting in off the unfortunate Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Newcastle United cut the gap at the top to four points but, more importantly, achieved promotion on Monday night, getting over the line courtesy of a 4-1 defeat of Preston North End.

On Saturday, Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday recorded significant victories in the race for a Play-Off place, moving clear of Leeds United.

The Cottagers pulled off the Result of the Day as a brace from Stefan Johansen, a Tom Cairney penalty and a Scott Malone goal earned them a 4-1 win against Huddersfield Town.

As for Sheffield Wednesday, they defeated Derby County 2-1, and that's the same scoreline by which Leeds United lost at Burton Albion. The result means Leeds are three points off the Play-Offs with two games to go.

Reading remain third but were defeated 3-2 at Nottingham Forest as Mark Warburton's side moved three points clear of the drop zone.

Wigan Athletic drew 0-0 against Cardiff City to leave them deep in trouble, six points off safety, and Blackburn Rovers also remain in the bottom three after a 0-0 draw at Wolves.

On Sunday, Birmingham City suffered a 1-0 Second City derby defeat at Aston Villa in Harry Redknapp's first game in charge, meaning they stay two points above the relegation zone.

Swindon Town joined Coventry City and Chesterfield in being relegated from Sky Bet League One after a 2-1 home defeat against Scunthorpe United.

A late Fleetwood Town goal denied Bolton Wanderers automatic promotion as the Cod Army defeated Gillingham 3-2, and that means the race for second place goes into the final round of matches with the Trotters ahead by two points following a 2-0 victory at Port Vale.

The battle for the final Play-Off spot will also go to the final weekend. Millwall, currently in sixth, were defeated at home for the first time in 15 outings, losing to Oxford United, but Southend United and Rochdale both failed to capitalise.

Southend, one point behind, lost to Shrewsbury Town, while Rochdale, who are two points off the Lions, drew 1-1 against Oldham.

That win for the Shrews moved them away from relegation, and Bury beat Northampton Town 3-0 to do the same, meaning Port Vale will be relegated if they fail to win their game in hand.

Champions Sheffield United continued their march towards 100 points courtesy of a 3-0 win over MK Dons, in a match which featured Billy Sharp's 200th and 201st league goals.

Leyton Orient's relegation out of the EFL was confirmed on Matchday 44 after they lost 3-0 at Crewe Alexandra.

It was a better day for Newport County, though, as they moved out of the relegation zone with a surprise victory over Accrington Stanley, which saw Hartlepool United fall into the bottom two. Pools lost 2-0 at home to Barnet.

A fine result for @NewportCounty today. 👏

The race for the Play-Offs remains tight with just two games to play, as only five points separate 14th-placed Grimsby Town and Stevenage, in seventh.

Luton Town are fourth after their 2-1 win over Notts County, and Exeter moved up to fifth by beating Morecambe 3-1.

Blackpool's 3-0 home triumph over Cheltenham Town means they rose to sixth, and Stevenage dropped to seventh after a 1-0 home defeat against Mansfield Town.

The Stags, along with Wycombe Wanderers, are within a point of a Play-Off spot. The Chairboys' three points came at home to table-topping Doncaster Rovers, who are two points clear at the summit with two games to go.

Carlisle United also remain within a point of seventh after battling back from 2-0 down at Crawley to draw 3-3.

Elsewhere, Cambridge United went down 2-1 at Fratton Park against Portsmouth, and Colchester shared a goalless draw with Plymouth. Both sides are still within touching distance of a Play-Off spot.
