Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

15 April 2017

Sheffield United were confirmed as Sky Bet League One champions on Saturday after Bolton's loss followed the Blades' victory on Friday.

Brighton & Hove Albion stretched their lead at the Sky Bet Championship summit to four points with a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Seagulls' success was largely down to the performance of Anthony Knockaert, who scored both of their goals to secure what proved to be a vital three points.

Second-placed Newcastle United had to wait until 7.45pm to take to the field, when they faced Leeds United, and they had to settle for a point after Chris Wood bagged a last-gasp leveller for the visitors.

In the 3pm kick-offs, third-placed Huddersfield Town beat Preston North End 3-2 in a thrilling match, to keep in touching distance of the top two.

Sheffield Wednesday maintained their place in the Play-Offs by seeing off Cardiff City 1-0 - Fernando Forestieri sealing the win late on - but Fulham remained hot on their heels thanks to a 3-1 success at Norwich City.

At the bottom, Blackburn Rovers picked up a priceless three points at Nottingham Forest, to drag them into the mire, and Birmingham are also becoming involved, particularly after their 1-1 draw at already-relegated Rotherham.

One of the stand-out performances of Good Friday came at Griffin Park, where Lasse Vibe and Jota inspired Brentford to a 4-0 triumph over Derby County.

On Saturday afternoon, Reading ended Aston Villa's fine run of home form with a 3-1 win partly thanks to a Joseph Mendes brace.

On Thursday night, Nick Powell stepped off the bench and hit a breathtaking 11-minute hat-trick to see Wigan secure a come-from-behind win over Barnsley.

The Blades were confirmed as champions on Saturday, their win on Friday over Port Vale was followed by Bolton's loss at Oldham to seal the crown.

Coventry City’s relegation to Sky Bet League Two was confirmed after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic.

That result leaves the Sky Blues 10 points from safety with only three matches to go.

Elsewhere in the relegation battle, Chesterfield were thumped 4-0 at home to Southend to remain deep in trouble, while Swindon drew and Port Vale lost.

The Valiants are a single point from safety and have a game in hand over Bury, who sit in that coveted 20th spot. Above them are Shrewsbury, who drew against Walsall.

Gillingham, meanwhile, climbed up to 17th, four points above the bottom four, following a 3-1 victory over Bristol Rovers.

At the top, promotion-chasing duo Bradford and Fleetwood both won to keep their hunt for an automatic spot on.

In the race for the Play-Offs Millwall retained sixth spot in what is becoming a thrilling fight, with a 3-0 win, ahead of Southend, who notched that aforementioned victory.

Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth both edged towards promotion after they shared a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park.

Argyle could’ve been promoted but Luton Town’s point against Leyton Orient prolonged their wait for confirmation of their rise into Sky Bet League One.

Exeter City were the only victors of the teams in the Play-Off places, seeing off Barnet 2-1, while Stevenage lost and Carlisle, in seventh, drew.

Blackpool failed to close the gap on the Cumbrians in the Play-Off chase, sharing a 0-0 draw with Accrington, and neither could ninth-placed Colchester, who drew with table-toppers Doncaster.

At the bottom, Newport County are now just one point from safety. They won 1-0 at home to Yeovil Town to close the gap on Hartlepool, after the Pools drew 1-1 against Carlisle.

That result pulled Yeovil right into the mix, and Cheltenham, who drew 1-1 at Crawley, are also involved.
