Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

1 April 2017

Rotherham United suffered relegation to Sky Bet League One after a 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham.

Sone Aluko was the goalscorer, inflicting a 31st defeat of the season on the Millers, and the result took Slavisa Jokanovic’s side into the Play-Off places.

The Cottagers claimed their place in the top six after Sheffield Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw at Barnsley in the early kick-off.

At the top, leaders Newcastle United overcame Wigan Athletic 2-1, while second-placed Brighton won 1-0 against Blackburn, which was Tony Mowbray’s first loss as Rovers boss.

Those victories were significant for the two promotion-chasers as Huddersfield Town, in third, lost 1-0 to Burton Albion. The three points moved the Brewers away from the drop zone.

Another relegation-threatened side, Bristol City, saw their upturn in form come to an end, losing 2-0 at Brentford.

In Saturday's late kick-off, Reading moved above Leeds and up to fourth in the table thanks to a Yann Kermorgant goal.

On Friday night, meanwhile, Gary Rowett watched his Derby County side see off QPR in his first home match as Rams manager.

Bolton Wanderers failed to fully take advantage of Sheffield United’s inactivity at the top of the division, sharing a goalless draw with Chesterfield.

The Trotters couldn't find a way through to extend their winning run to five successive games and that means the Blades lead the division by six points, with six matches to go.

Third-placed Fleetwood Town also dropped points, losing 1-0 at home to Swindon Town, who moved to within three points of safety as a consequence.

Coventry City - not in action owing to Sunday’s Checkatrade Trophy Final - Chesterfield and Shrewsbury Town are the other sides in the bottom four.

The Shrews find themselves in the relegation zone after Port Vale beat AFC Wimbledon 2-0 to climb up to 18th.

That result pulled Oldham Athletic and Gillingham back into the mix, with those teams both suffering defeats. The Gills’ loss was a thriller, as they came from 2-0 down at MK Dons to level the match, before going on to taste a 3-2 reverse.

Stevenage had to lose if Doncaster were to be promoted, but they beat Barnet 1-0, and that was the scoreline by which Luton Town overcame Blackpool in a battle between two Play-Off chasers.

The Tangerines dropped out of the top seven as a result, with Carlisle United rising after ending a seven-match winless run, courtesy of a 2-0 success at Yeovil Town.
