Checkatrade Trophy: Record-breaking attendance for final

2 April 2017

It was a record-breaking day at Wembley as 74,434 fans watched Coventry City beat Oxford United in the 2017 Checkatrade Trophy final.

That was the highest attendance for the competition since Wembley reopened in 2008.
The final was one of the highest attended matches in Europe over the weekend, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich drawing larger crowds as fans enjoyed a sun-soaked trip to Wembley.
Coventry's 2-1 victory, with the decisive goal scored by one of the club's homegrown players George Thomas, was watched by more fans than all but one of England's weekend matches - beaten only by a 75,397 crowd at Old Trafford.
The final has always had a habit of drawing large crowds, with nearly 500,000 supporters combined watching the last nine finals since its return to Wembley in 2008.
The competition's previous highest attendance at the New Wembley was 73,476 when Southampton beat Carlisle in 2010 and, in 2015, Bristol City's victory against Walsall was watched by 72,315.

The EFL Trophy's highest ever attendance was recorded when 80,841 watched Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Burnley 2-0 in 1988.
