Coventry City lifted the Checkatrade Trophy after a 2-1 victory over Oxford United in front of 74,434 fans at Wembley Stadium.
Gael Bigirimana and George Thomas were the goalscorers on a historic day for the Sky Blues, 30 years after they last appeared at the national stadium. It took only 11 minutes for Bigirimana to get the opener, slotting home after Stuart Beavon’s shot was blocked.
And it was 2-0 in the 56th minute when City Academy graduate Thomas collected a Kyel Reid cross and fired home exquisitely on the half-volley from the edge of the box.
Oxford hit back with 15 minutes to go through substitute Liam Sercombe, who rifled a shot through a crowded box to find the net, but it was Coventry’s day.
FA Cup winners in 1987, Checkatrade Trophy winners in 2017 - Wembley was Sky Blue once again.
