Sky Bet EFL: Midweek round-up

14 September 2016

Newcastle United ran riot on Matchday 7 in the Sky Bet Championship, winning 6-0 at Queens Park Rangers.

Jonjo Shelvey netted twice, including a sublime second-half effort from distance, as Rafa Benitez's men made it five successive wins.

They remain second, though, despite table-toppers Huddersfield falling to their first defeat of the season at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls are on 11 points in the table after that success, alongside Reading, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday, with the latter two of that trio picking up three points.

Mick McCarthy's men were 1-0 victors over Derby County, while Sheffield Wednesday came from 2-0 down to beat Bristol City 3-2, with Kieran Lee scoring the winner at the death.

Norwich City were also victorious, seeing off Wigan Athletic 2-1 to go fourth, a point behind Barnsley, who cruised to a 4-0 triumph at Wolves.

At the other end, Leeds United and Preston North End pulled away from the bottom three with respective wins over Blackburn Rovers (2-1) and Cardiff City (3-0).

On Wednesday, Rotherham United and Nottingham Forest played out a thrilling 2-2 draw, while Brentford stole a point at Aston Villa courtesy of a late John Egan goal.

The only game in Sky Bet League One saw Bristol Rovers and Walsall share the spoils after a 1-1 draw.

The visiting Saddlers took the lead after only 16 minutes when Erhun Oztumer found the net, only for Matty Taylor to equalise 10 minutes later from the penalty spot.
