Sky Bet EFL: Matchday 9 round-up

24 September 2016

Norwich City moved to the top of the Sky Bet Championship on Matchday 9 after previous leaders Huddersfield Town slipped up at Reading.

The Canaries' 3-1 win against Burton Albion was enough to take them into top spot with the Terriers losing 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

Rickie Lambert opened his scoring account for Cardiff City and his two second-half goals saw the Bluebirds come from behind to defeat Rotherham 2-1.

At Craven Cottage, Bristol City got back to winning ways with a fine 4-0 victory over Fulham. Tammy Abraham was once again on the scoresheet to grab his seventh league goal of the campaign.

Leeds United made it three consecutive league wins for the first time under Garry Monk - their 1-0 home victory over Ipswich was thanks to yet another Chris Wood strike.

Barnsley's fine goal scoring form came to an end at the AMEX stadium, where they fell to a 2-0 defeat. Glenn Murray scored twice as the Seagulls moved into third place in the Sky Bet Championship standings.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves picked up home wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford respectively, while Blackburn won 2-1 at Derby despite going a goal down.

In Saturday's evening kick-off, Aaron Tshibola scored his first goal for Aston Villa in front of the Sky Sports cameras to rescue a point against Newcastle United.

Rochdale moved away from the bottom of Sky Bet League One with an impressive 3-2 win away at Millwall, which took the Result of the Day honours in the EFL.

Despite taking the lead early on, Dale found themselves behind at the break. An equaliser came from Calvin Andrew on 67 minutes, and then the winner was scored from the penalty spot in the third minute of added time by Ian Henderson.

Leaders Scunthorpe United were held to a draw at home by 10-man Sheffield United. A penalty from Blades skipper and former Iron front-man Billy Sharp made it 2-2 and snatched a point for the Blades.

Northampton Town got back to winning ways with a 4-0 home victory over Southend, with the visitors having a man sent off. It was the perfect response from the Cobblers following the end to their 31-game unbeaten run last time out.

Ryan Colclough netted a hat-trick for MK Dons as they stormed to a 4-1 triumph over Uwe Rosler's Fleetwood Town. It was the Dons' first win in four, and Fleetwood's second successive defeat.

Plymouth Argyle's Sky Bet League Two winning streak came to an end as they were held at home by 10-man Hartlepool United.

It could have been far worse for the Pilgrims though - they were behind after just 20 minutes but a Jake Jervis penalty in the 81st minute rescued a point for the division's leaders.

Gary Johnson's return to Huish Park was not as successful as he might have hoped as his Cheltenham Town side fell to a 4-2 defeat to his former employers Yeovil Town.

Cambridge United got their first victory of the season on Matchday 9, coming from a goal down to defeat Newport County away from home. Only goal difference now separates the sides at the bottom of Sky Bet League Two.

Portsmouth strolled into second spot with a 5-1 home triumph over Barnet. Five different scorers found the net for Pompey after they initially went behind early on.

Keith Curle's Carlisle maintained their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League Two season with a 1-0 home win over Wycombe Wanderers, which was the Chairboys' fourth defeat in five games and sees them sit in 21st position.
