Sky Bet Championship: Reading leave it late to beat Ipswich Town

9 September 2016

Danny Williams scored a last-gasp penalty to earn Reading a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town in the Sky Bet Championship on Friday night.

In a game live on Sky Sports, Williams’ decisive goal was the third spot-kick of the match and the result saw the Royals move up to third in the table.

The first half was a fairly tame affair until Garath McCleary slotted home the opening penalty in stoppage time, following a handball by Ipswich’s Grant Ward.

The Tractor Boys were level immediately after the restart, though, when Brett Pitman rifled into the net from 12 yards, having been fouled by defender Tyler Blackett.

Tommy Smith had a golden chance for Ipswich but he blazed over, and then Williams came to the fore late on.

The spot-kick was awarded following some tussling in the box and the midfielder kept his cool to seal all three points for Jaap Stam’s men.
