David Wagner named Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month

9 September 2016

Huddersfield Town head coach David Wagner has been named the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for August.

It was a stunning start to the season for Wagner’s men. The German’s methods have drawn their rewards with a haul of 13 points from his side’s opening five games.

A victory at Newcastle United was followed by a draw to Aston Villa four days later, in a month full of impressive performances.

Wagner said: “I accept the August Manager of the Month award on behalf of every player, member of staff and everyone else connected with Huddersfield Town.

“Everyone here has worked unbelievably hard during pre-season and during August and they have earned the results that the team enjoyed.

“We are workers, not dreamers, so nobody here is getting carried away. You can never guarantee results in football, but we can guarantee that we will work as hard as possible to try and get more good results in September.”

George Burley, who chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel, said: “Huddersfield have made a fantastic start to the season, topping the table with 13 points from five games.

"They remained unbeaten and only dropped two points with a fine away performance at Aston Villa. David’s methods have certainly given Huddersfield a new lease of life so far this season.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Wagner has settled to life in the Championship incredibly well since arriving from the Bundesliga.

“This season has started like a dream, with an eye-catching set of results and only Aston Villa managing to avoid defeat to Town so far this season. The impact he has had on the players since arriving is quite remarkable.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “Huddersfield Town's David Wagner steered his side to the top of the table with four wins from five matches in the month of August.

“Wagner took over from Chris Powell last November and the Terriers avoided relegation by a comfortable 11 points last season.

“They will be looking up and not down this term."

The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Ipswich Town manager George Burley, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Marketing Director Drew Barrand, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.
