Carlisle United overcame Oldham Athletic in a nine-goal thriller on what was a goal-filled opening night of the 2016/17 Checkatrade Trophy.
In a topsy-turvy affair at Boundary Park, Michael Raynes grabbed the ninth and final goal of the contest to earn the Cumbrians an epic 5-4 victory.Norwich City were the night’s big winners, thumping Peterborough United 6-1, with Tony Andreu helping himself to a hat-trick - one of three during the evening.
Amadou Bakayoko also claimed the match ball after Walsall eased past Grimsby Town 5-2, and Portsmouth’s Michael Smith also hit three — but that wasn't enough as Pompey lost 4-3 at Yeovil Town.
Three fixtures finished level after 90 minutes, resulting in penalty shoot-outs for a bonus point. Charlton Athletic, Leicester City and Milton Keynes Dons kept their cool from the spot, at the expense of Southampton, Sheffield United and Barnet respectively.
Bury and Crewe Alexandra cruised to victories in the Northern Section, winning 4-1 and 3-0 respectively, and the latter scoreline was mirrored by AFC Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers in the Southern Section.
Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth entered the fray to set up the third and final goal in his side's win over Northampton Town. Plymouth also ran out 4-1 winners, coming from a goal down to ease past Newport County.
On Wednesday 31st August, goals from Genaro Snijders and Graham Burke saw Notts County beat Hartlepool United 2-1.
