The Italian won only one of his 11 Sky Bet Championship games in charge of the Claret and Blue, with his final match being Saturday's defeat at Preston North End.

Villa, who were relegated from the top flight last term, sit 19th in the Championship.

Assistant Steve Clarke has been placed in temporary charge of first-team affairs.
