Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

13 November 2016

Carlisle United saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end on Matchday 16 after suffering a defeat to Newport County.

Josh Sheehan and Rhys Healey scored the goals for the rock-bottom Exiles, who now have back-to-back wins for the first time this season. It was also the club’s fifth successive victory over the Cumbrians.

That result gave Plymouth Argyle the chance to extend their lead at the summit to seven points and they took full advantage, coming from behind to see off Crewe Alexandra 2-1.

The other teams in the top five also won. Third-placed Doncaster beat Exeter 3-1, Portsmouth, in fourth, won 4-0 against Mansfield Town, while fifth-placed Luton Town triumphed 1-0 against Accrington Stanley.

At Blundell Park, Marcus Bignot watched his Grimsby Town side throw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Barnet in his first game in charge.

Elsewhere, Hartlepool United, Wycombe Wanderers and Cambridge United all picked up three points to move into 15th, 16th, and 17th respectively.

Tim Sherwood’s time at Swindon Town started perfectly, with the newly-installed Director of Football watching his team win 3-0 against Charlton Athletic.

Sean Murray’s deflected goal got the ball rolling in the early kick-off, which was live on Sky Sports, while Lloyd Jones and Man of the Match Johnny Goddard added gloss in the second half.

That result moved the Robins out of the bottom four, and Shrewsbury Town lifted themselves off of the foot of the division, winning 2-0 against Oxford United in a 3pm match.

At the top of the division, leaders Scunthorpe United recorded a 1-0 success against Coventry City, and Bradford City moved up to second for 24 hours at least by thumping Rochdale 4-0.

Southend United also scored four - Nile Ranger hit two of those for his first goals for the club - as they inflicted a seventh successive loss on Bury.

Gillingham were winless in seven going into Saturday but saw off Northampton Town 2-1, and that was the scoreline Port Vale registered against Fleetwood Town to rise up to sixth.

On Sunday, the day's live Sky Sports action began with Peterborough's home win over Bolton Wanderers. This was followed by a fine performance from Sheffield United, who notched three second-half goals in a 4-1 win away at bottom side Chesterfield.
