Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 16 round-up

5 November 2016

Newcastle United kept up their winning streak, extending it to seven Sky Bet Championship games with a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City on Matchday 16.

First-half strikes from Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran ensured the Magpies retained their three-point lead at the top of the table.

In the day’s late kick-off, Brighton & Hove Albion kept up the pressure with a 2-0 win against Bristol City at Ashton Gate, in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Norwich and Huddersfield both lost ground on the top two after dropping points at home. The Terriers squandered a lead to draw against Birmingham while, at Carrow Road, Garry Monk’s Leeds came out on top in a five-goal thriller, thanks to a 90th-minute strike from teenage midfielder Ronaldo Vieira. The Whites now occupy a top-six spot for the first time this season.

Derby County climbed away from the bottom of the table with a 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the day’s early kick-off. Tom Ince’s double means Steve McClaren’s side now sit 16th, while Wolves will embark on a new chapter under Paul Lambert, who was named their new head coach after the game.

Warren Joyce suffered defeat in his first game in charge of Wigan Athletic. The new man in the dugout saw his side go two down to Reading after just five minutes through Gareth McCleary's quickfire double - the Royals eventually running out 3-0 winners.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Aston Villa, Ipswich and Preston, but Burton and Barnsley nor Nottingham Forest and QPR could be separated.
