England: Wycombe Wanderers to England U21s - Gareth Ainsworth proud of duo

15 November 2016

Gareth Ainsworth has expressed his pride at seeing two former Wycombe Wanderers players line up alongside each other for the England Under-21 side.

Kortney Hause and Alfie Mawson were both handed their EFL debuts during their time at Adams Park before going on to climb the leagues and earn international recognition with the Three Lions.

Wolves defender Hause made his debut for the Under-21s last year while Mawson – now at Swansea – earned his first cap in the 3-2 defeat in France on Monday evening.

Ainsworth said: “Both players really stood out for me in their early days with us and I knew it wouldn’t be long until they progressed up the leagues and made a real name for themselves.

“Everyone at Wycombe Wanderers should be proud of the part that we played in the early stages of their development and to see Kortney and Alfie singing the national anthem and wearing the Three Lions was a special moment.

“We’ll always follow their careers closely and I’m sure they’ll be an inspiration to the young lads in our squad today who could maybe one day follow in their footsteps.”

Hause made his senior debut for the Wanderers in November 2012, going on to make 31 appearances in total before earning a move to Wolves in January 2014.

Mawson arrived at Adams Park in August 2014 on a loan deal from Brentford - where he had made only one substitute appearance in a cup match – and clinched both the Supporters’ Player and Players’ Player of the Year prizes in an outstanding season which saw him make 50 appearances prior to signing a permanent deal at Barnsley.
