Bury: David Flitcroft departs - the Manager of the Month curse?

17 November 2016

The dreaded Manager of the Month curse - is it real? Well, if David Flitcroft’s season is anything to go by, it certainly is...

The 42-year-old left his role as manager of Bury on Wednesday after a run of seven straight defeats in Sky Bet League One, and 11 winless games in all competitions.

What’s more staggering is the fact that run of form followed a faultless September in which Flitcroft guided the Shakers to five victories in five, which saw them sit in the automatic promotion places.

Bury's scintillating September

03/09/16: Bury 4-1 Port Vale
10/09/16: Bury 2-1 Shrewsbury
17/09/16: Swindon 1-2 Bury
24/09/16: Bury 2-1 Chesterfield
27/09/16: MK Dons 1-3 Bury

Flitcroft deservedly collected the division’s Manager of the Month prize after that run and, upon collecting his award, he said: “There’s a lot of people involved in winning the award.

“Obviously I get the prize, and it does say Manager of the Month, but it is important to give credit to the lads, give credit to my staff who work incredibly hard, the chairman, the board and all of the supporters.

“We’re trying to bring the club together as one, and I’ll stand there and take the award, but there’s so many people behind the scenes who deserve credit and we’ve won it as a club.”

Exactly 40 days later, and with the Shakers now sitting 16th in Sky Bet League One, three points above the drop zone, the former Barnsley boss, and his assistant Ben Futcher, are out of work.

So, Manager of the Month curse, is it real? Well, here’s a look at who has won the award so far this season, and what has happened in the games after.

August

Sky Bet Championship: David Wagner (Huddersfield Town)

- Beat Leeds United 1-0 a day after collecting the award. The Terriers have been somewhat inconsistent since, but still sit a lofty third.

Sky Bet League One: Phil Parkinson (Bolton Wanderers)

- After collecting the award, Bolton went through September without winning a single game.

Sky Bet League Two: Jim Bentley (Morecambe)

-  Bentley watched his side lose 5-1 to Doncaster Rovers the day after he picked up his award, and they’ve won only two of nine since.

September

Sky Bet Championship: Alex Neil (Norwich City)

- Norwich beat Rotherham in the match after Neil was named Manager of the Month, but they haven’t won since, losing three of their last four.

Sky Bet League One: David Flitcroft (Bury)

- Failed to guide his team to three points in the matches after and parted ways with Bury 40 days after collecting his award.

Sky Bet League Two: Derek Adams (Plymouth Argyle)

- Curse? What curse? Adams’ Argyle are flying and, since winning the award, his table-toppers haven’t lost – only dropping points in a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth.

October

Sky Bet Championship: Rafael Benitez (Newcastle United)

- Owing to the international break, Newcastle are yet to play since Benitez picked up the award. They face Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Sky Bet League One: Phil Parkinson (Bolton Wanderers)

- A winless September was followed by 15 points from 18 in October but, after being named Manager of the Month for a second time this term, his Bolton side lost 1-0 at Peterborough United last Sunday.

Sky Bet League Two: Keith Curse (Carlisle United)

- Unbeaten prior to Curle collecting the Manager of the Month prize for October, Carlisle suffered their first defeat of 2016/17 last time out, losing 2-0 at rock-bottom Newport County.
