Sky Bet Play-Offs: Sheffield Wednesday hold their nerve to reach Wembley

16 May 2016

Sheffield Wednesday saw of a spirited Brighton & Hove Albion display to book their place in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final.

The Owls led 2-0 on aggregate coming into the second leg, courtesy of Ross Wallace and Kieran Lee’s goals at Hillsborough last Friday night.

They were forced to defend from the off in the decisive clash at the Amex, though, as the injured Anthony Knockaert reaped havoc going forwards. The Frenchman hit the inside of the post from a free-kick, before seeing a number of efforts blocked and saved.

Brighton did finally make their pressure pay, and broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Lewis Dunk tapped in Knockaert’s delivery, sending the home crowd into raptures.

But, less than 10 minutes later, Wallace’s cross into the box evaded everybody, and Wednesday struck level before defending solidly to see out the match.

The end of the month will now see the club visit Wembley Stadium for the first time since it reopened in 2007, where they’ll face one of Hull City or Derby County.
