Sky Bet League 2: Matchday 46 review

7 May 2016

Oxford United and Bristol Rovers secured promotion to Sky Bet League 1 for next season on a breathtaking final afternoon.

Oxford cruised to a 3-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers in front of their home fans to end the campaign second in the table, but drama ensued beneath them.

With Accrington Stanley drawing 0-0 at home to Stevenage, John Coleman’s side were all set for a promotion celebration.

But, in second-half stoppage time, Bristol Rovers netted a winning goal through Lee Brown to beat Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1, and steal the final automatic promotion spot.

The triumph means it’s now back-to-back promotions for Rovers, while Stanley must settle for a place in the Sky Bet League 2 Play-Offs.

There, they’ll play AFC Wimbledon, while Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth make up the other tie.

It was a mixed afternoon for those sides; Wimbledon beat Newport County 1-0 and Plymouth thumped Hartlepool United 5-0, but Portsmouth suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of champions Northampton Town.

There was also a big scoreline in the game between Notts County and Carlisle United, with the latter romping to a 5-0 success.

Elsewhere, there were final day wins for Barnet, Luton Town and Leyton Orient.
