Burton Albion secured a historic promotion to the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday and Brewers defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff believes it was deserved.
A 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers on the final day saw Burton finish second in Sky Bet League 1, securing Sky Bet Championship football for the first time in the club's history. That makes it back-to-back promotions for the Brewers, who only took their place in The Football League when they won the Conference in 2009.
“It's a great feeling - to think that two years ago we were in League 2 and to see where we are now - what we have achieved as a club and a team is fantastic,” the Australian told the club's official website.
“You look at this season and see what we have done and the fact that we were at the top for four months and despite a little shake towards the end we deserve to be there. Importantly, we carried on and finished the job.”
Walsall could have overtaken Burton on the last day to snatch promotion, and they put the pressure on with the Saddlers winning 5-0 at Port Vale.
But a point was enough for Nigel Clough's men, and Cansdell-Sherriff always maintained confidence.
“I knew we would get the job done one way or another. Obviously, when you are playing a game and chances arise for the opposition you get a little nervous but the result is there and we held our own.”
