AFC Wimbledon win Sky Bet League 2 Kinder+Sport Kids Cup at Wembley

30 May 2016

AFC Wimbledon won the Sky Bet League 2 Kinder+Sport Kids Cup at Wembley Stadium after a 2-0 win over Mansfield Town.

Finley Munroe and Ralph Vigrass scored the goals on the day that the senior Dons team defeated Plymouth Argyle in the Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off Final.

Represented by Cleves School, Wimbledon were in control for the majority of the match, despite a goalless first half.

Mansfield captain Aidan Reader went close in the first period with a long-range free-kick, in what was their only real effort on goal, while Vigrass also saw his effort steer narrowly wide of the post.

But Dons turned on the style in the second half, and went ahead through Munroe after he planted his shot into the bottom-left corner.

Vigrass followed it up with a similar strike, rounding three Stags players before also finding the bottom corner of the net, ensuring AFC Wimbledon's name was etched onto the Kinder+Sport Kids Cup trophy.

Speaking after the match, coach Craig Smith said: "These are a great bunch, second to none. At half-time, we said 'you're doing everything right, more of the same, just take your chances' and Finley [Munroe] took his!

"To win here is very special, it's the icing on the cake. The closer we got, the more we thought we could win the tournament, and you can't top this."

Munroe added: "I'm really happy to play at Wembley and to score a goal as well. It's even more special with AFC Wimbledon playing too, it's a fantastic feeling."

The Football League Kids Cup, alongside the Girls Cup for under-13s, is sponsored by Ferrero’s Kinder+Sport programme. Encouraging children to be physically active and embrace the joy of moving is one of Ferrero’s key aims and core corporate social responsibility principles, both in the UK and globally. The Kinder+Sport programme is designed to promote active lifestyles through dynamic play and sports among children and their families, and has reached 15 million children in 27 countries to date.

In the UK, Kinder+Sport includes a number of initiatives. The Kinder+Sport Move and Learn programme is a national, school-based education programme delivered in partnership with The Football League Trust that helps children learn about the importance of a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Ferrero also partners with The Football League Trust to deliver two more national competitions, the Kinder+Sport Futsal Cup for the under-16 age group, and the Kinder+Sport Challenge Cup for the under-18s group.

Both competitions encourage children to get involved with sport and physical activity, whilst giving them a unique opportunity to play at football stadiums. Overall, in the academic year 2015/16, Kinder+Sport together with The Football League Trust will reach more than 47,000 children, helping them to be more active and learn about the benefits of an active lifestyle.
