Middlesbrough defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Friday night to return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.
Gaston Ramirez starred in front of the Sky Sports cameras, scoring twice to send Boro to the summit - for a few hours at least.
The hosts started off brightly and got their reward midway through the first half, when Adam Clayton’s delivery found the head of the Uruguayan and found its way beyond Wolves’ stopper Carl Ikeme.
It was 1-0 at half-time, although Aitor Karanka’s men nearly doubled the lead within 20 seconds of the restart - Ikeme equal to Jordan Rhodes’ close-range header.
That was the story for much of the match, with the Nigerian stopper coming out on top against Boro’s record signing, but he could do nothing about Ramirez’s second goal, which came just before the hour via a deflection.
The visitors made it an interesting last few minutes when Joe Mason flicked a header beyond Dimi Konstantopoulos, but it was too little, too late for Wolves as the Riverside faithful went home happy.
