York City striker Bradley Fewster has been named the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Month for February.
His first month as a 20-year-old was a memorable one for the Middlesbrough loanee with five goals in as many games. His directness and penchant for taking a shot early helped York to home wins against Notts County and Exeter City.York manager Jackie McNamara said: “It has been a tough period for everyone but I’m delighted for him and hopefully he gets a big lift and confidence by receiving this award.
“He looked sharp and took his opportunities well, helping us off the bottom of the league and out of relegation zone at the time.
“He’s scored some important goals for us and if we create opportunities for the kid, he will score them, it’s as simple as that, he’s a great finisher.”
Fewster said: “It’s was the first month since I’d joined club where I was played up front on a regular basis and I think I proved with the goals I scored it’s my preferred position.
“I played with a few different partners during February and it was great experience. I’m just glad to have been able to score regularly.
“I was always confident I could score at this level and I’m just happy I’ve been able to show that.
“It’s been great to gain vital experience and score goals for York City, but ultimately it’s about helping the club stay up and hopefully I can net a few more between now and the end of the season to make that happen.”
Sky Sports’ Football League pundit Don Goodman said: “Fox-in-the-box Bradley Fewster has been awarded the Player of the Month award for his outstanding performance, netting five goals in his past five games.
“This is a tremendous feat under any circumstances but is elevated as an achievement because of York City’s perilous position.”
Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “Bradley Fewster has been thrust into a relegation battle with York after his loan move from Middlesbrough in November.
“However, the youngster has shown great heart for the fight and scored five goals in February on the way to helping York to two crucial wins.
“The Minstermen still find themselves in trouble at the foot of League 2 but if they can keep Fewster scoring they can look to overhaul the gap to safety.”
The judging panel for the Sky Bet Player of the Month comprises Sky Sports Football League expert Don Goodman; Football League Head of Communications John Nagle; League Managers Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.
