Ahead of Euro 2016, a survey of thousands of fans of EFL clubs has revealed that while the vast majority will be supporting England, more think it will be Germany that lift the trophy. Those who believe the Germans will reign supreme in France also think England will have the familiar feeling of being knocked out in the quarter-finals.
More than 7,500 fans gave their views as part of the EFL survey. In total, 86% answered England when asked who they would be supporting in the tournament. Other sides backed by fans of EFL clubs were Wales (4%), Republic of Ireland (2%), Northern Ireland, Germany and Italy (all 1%).
It was a different story, though, when fans were asked who they thought would win Euro 2016 - with 32% saying Germany, compared to 19% believing it will be England who lift the trophy in Paris on 10th July.
Hosts France - with 17% - were the third most backed team to win, followed by Spain (14%), Belgium (4%) and Italy (3%), ahead of Portugal and Wales (1%).
Fans were also asked how far they thought the team they were supporting would get in the tournament. Of those backing England, 39% thought they would reach the quarter-final stage, with 26% feeling they would go one stage further and reach the semi-finals. One in five think England will reach the final with 16% thinking it will be England that lift the trophy. Only 2% of England fans think they will fail to make it out of their group.
Figures are based on an EFL survey of 7,642 fans.
