Wolverhampton Wanderers kick-off 2016 with a win at Brighton & Hove Albion

1 January 2016

Wolverhampton Wanderers kicked-off 2016 in The Football League with a 1-0 Sky Bet Championship success at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The victory, which moved them within six points of the Play-Offs, was secured thanks to a first-half own goal.

Jordan Graham, who has provided Wolves with a spark of late, playing a part in eight goals in his nine appearances, sent in a cross which Connor Goldson turned past his own goalkeeper.

That proved decisive, even though the Seagulls applied pressure late on with Lewis Dunk seeing his header tipped over by Carl Ikeme from point-blank range.

In the second game of New Year’s Day, Hull City battled to a 2-1 victory at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers.

In a match of few chances, the Tigers’ top scorer Abel Hernandez stroked home the opener on the hour mark, before Sebastian Polter levelled for the hosts late on.

But Adama Diomande scored a winner in the 90th minute after a mix up at the back. QPR goalkeeper Robert Green punched a Sam Clucas cross but it hit Diomande and ended up in the back of the net.

That result moved Hull to within a point of second-placed Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship table and extended Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s wait for his first win as the R’s manager.
