Sky Bet League 1: Matchday 27 review

16 January 2016

Burton Albion prevailed in their mouthwatering clash with Coventry City to remain at the summit of the Sky Bet League 1 table.

The Brewers, whose place at the top was under threat from Coventry going into Matchday 27, secured a 2-0 victory courtesy of Calum Butcher and Stuart Beavon goals.

Walsall moved up to second with a 3-2 win away at Bury, after Gillingham surrendered a two-goal advantage at Doncaster Rovers. The Gills did, though, become the highest goalscorers in The Football League with 53 goals in total, after Peterborough United drew 0-0 with Southend United.

There was no doubts about the most entertaining game, which came at the County Ground as Swindon Town beat bottom club Crewe Alexandra 4-3. The Robins trailed 1-3 at half-time, but scored three in dramatic fashion after the break to clinch the spoils.

Blackpool moved out of the relegation places thanks to a thumping 5-0 win over Scunthorpe United in the biggest scoreline of the day, while Barnsley also pulled clear after a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.

Elsewhere, John Sheridan’s return to Oldham Athletic ended in defeat to Bradford City, and Sheffield United closed the gap to the Play-Off places to just one point after a 2-1 triumph at Colchester United.

On Sunday, Millwall produced a first-half blitz to earn themselves all three points against Port Vale. Lee Gregory's brace and a Steve Morison effort put the Lions on their way to a 3-1 success.
