There are four games taking place in Sky Bet League 1 this weekend, with plenty of crucial points up for grabs at both ends of the table.Wigan Athletic and Gillingham kicked off proceedings in a thrilling Thursday night encounter at the DW Stadium - with the visitors missing the chance to move into top spot.
Here are the weekend’s Sky Bet League 1 fixtures in full (kick-off is at 3pm unless stated):
Thursday 7th January
Wigan Athletic v Gillingham (7.45pm - live on Sky Sports)
Saturday 9th January
Blackpool v Port Vale
Oldham Athletic v Millwall
Rochdale v Chesterfield
Swindon Town v Southend United
Despite the Gills holding a 2-0 lead with more than an hour on the clock, goals from Will Grigg, Max Power and captain Craig Morgan rescued all three points for the Wigan in dramatic fashion. The result means Burton Albion, who are in FA Cup action this weekend, stay put at the top of the standings.
On Saturday, Blackpool host Port Vale at Bloomfield Road knowing a win will take them out of the relegation places.
The Tangerines sit 21st on 25 points, one behind Shrewsbury Town and Fleetwood Town, the latter of which are in Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action against Barnsley this weekend.
Oldham Athletic will be in the drop zone come the end of the weekend regardless of their result against Millwall, but they can take a much-needed step towards safety on their home patch.
The Latics haven’t recorded victory in six matches, and took just two points from a possible nine from their festive fixtures. Millwall have been out of sorts themselves of late, picking up just one win in their last four to see their Play-Off chase dented.
Just above the Lions are Rochdale, who host Chesterfield at Spotland. Dale have taken two wins from their last three, while the traveling Spireites ended their eight-match winless run with a thumping 7-1 triumph against Shrewsbury last time out.
Looking to go level on points with Peterborough in the first of the Play-Off places are Southend United, who face Swindon Town at Roots Hall. Phil Brown’s men have endured a miserable last two games, losing 4-0 and 3-0 at the hands of Millwall and Doncaster Rovers.
