Sky Bet League 1: Matchday 25 review

2 January 2016

Adam Armstrong and Lee Novak both hit hat-tricks on a goal-filled afternoon in Sky Bet League 1.

Armstrong was scoring for fun in 2015, and it seems he has no intention of stopping this year. The Coventry City teenager scored three of the five goals that the Sky Blues put past bottom club Crewe Alexandra.

Chesterfield entered the New Year on the back of an eight-game winless run, but they brought that to an end in some style with a 7-1 rout of Shrewsbury Town. Novak's treble was added to by braces from Jay O'Shea and Rai Simons.

Peterborough United were involved in a thriller at Bramall Lane, fending off two fightbacks from Sheffield United to win 3-2.

There were comfortable 3-0 wins for Doncaster Rovers, Gillingham and Rochdale - the latter defeating Walsall 3-0.

That handed Burton Albion the chance to return to the summit and, despite going down to 10 men in the first half, they grinded out a 1-0 win over Blackpool to take top spot.

Elsewhere, Barnsley and Fleetwood Town picked up home wins, while the games between Oldham Athletic and Colchester United, and Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic, both finished 1-1.
