Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week

We're back with the first Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week of 2016.

The first weekend of the New Year produced plenty of fine results and performances. As per usual, we've rounded up 11 of the best players and a manager - and here's our selection...

Goalkeeper: Carl Ikeme (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Wolves recorded the first Football League points of 2016 with a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on New Year's Day.

Brighton found Ikeme in fine form, with the Nigerian making several saves to deny the high-flying Seagulls and earn the Man of the Match vote from Wolves supporters.

Defender: George Friend (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough and Derby County locked horns in a top-two battle in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday, and it was Boro who came out on top to extend their advantage at the summit.

Friend defended well and was always an outlet down the left flank, and he got his reward with the second goal in the 2-0 success.

Defender: Paul Robinson (AFC Wimbledon)

AFC Wimbledon picked up an impressive 4-1 win away at Cambridge United to extend their unbeaten run in Sky Bet League 2 to four games.

Robinson was integral to the victory with a strong display at the back, and he also helped out at the other end by netting his first goal for the Dons.

Defender: Vincent Sasso (Sheffield Wednesday)

Sasso was thrown into the Wednesday starting XI for Saturday's visit to Fulham after Sam Hutchinson picked up an injury in the pre-match warm-up.

The Frenchman was returning from a lengthy spell out himself, but performed brilliantly in defence as the Owls kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 triumph.

Midfielder: Ricky Holmes (Northampton Town)

After making his way back from injury off the bench over previous weeks, Holmes returned to the starting line-up as the in-form Cobblers welcomed Barnet to Sixfields.

The winger dazzled throughout, helping himself to a fine goal and putting Marc Richards through to round off a comfortable 3-0 win.

Midfielder: Erhun Oztumer (Peterborough United)

Oztumer has been in fine form in the Peterborough midfield recently, and he was at it again as Posh came away from Bramall Lane with all three points.

The Turkish 24-year-old found the net with a phenomenal long-range effort, but all Peterborough's goals in the 3-2 win are well worth watching!

Midfielder: Mohamed Diame (Hull City)

Hull kicked off 2016 with three points on New Year's Day, and Diame produced a typically dynamic display as the Tigers defeated QPR.

The Senegalese international dominated the midfield, and produced a moment of brilliance to assist Abel Hernandez for the game's opening goal.

Midfielder: Bradley Dack (Gillingham)

Dack excelled for the Gills in 2015 and he carried that form into the New Year with another classy performance in their 3-0 win at home to Bradford City.

The 22-year-old set Gillingham on their way with a brilliant opening goal, and he then turned provider for Rory Donnelly to double the lead as the Kent outfit moved back into Sky Bet League 1's automatic promotion places.

Forward: Adam Armstrong (Coventry City)

Today's striking options are dominated by marksmen from Sky Bet League 1, and Armstrong is first up after a hat-trick for Coventry City in their 5-0 win at Crewe Alexandra.

We thought the teenage sensation deserved his place, but team-mate Chris Stokes weighed in on the debate on social media...

However, Sky Blues defender Ivor Lawton was quick to put Stokes back in his place - and here are the highlights!

Forward: Lee Novak (Chesterfield)

The Result of the Day from Matchday 25 went to Chesterfield, who ended an eight-game winless run to put Shrewsbury Town to the sword at the Proact Stadium.

Jay O'Shea and Rai Simons netted twice each for the Spireites, but they were outdone by Lee Novak, who hit a hat-trick in the 7-1 rout.

Forward: Calvin Andrew (Rochdale)

Another fine display over the weekend came from Rochdale, who cruised to success at Walsall – the Sky Bet League 1 leaders at the start of play.

The Saddlers struggled to handle Andrew throughout the 90 minutes, and it showed as the striker netted a brace in the 3-0 win.

Manager: John Still (Dagenham & Redbridge)

It was a winning start for Still, who made his third return to the Dagenham dugout in Saturday's trip to Exeter City.

The 2-1 victory was the Daggers' second in a row, and it lifted them out of the Sky Bet League 2 relegation zone.
