Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 28 review

23 January 2016

Hull City replaced Middlesbrough at the top of the Sky Bet Championship on Matchday 28 following a 1-0 win at Fulham.

Abel Hernandez scored his fourth goal in two games to propel the Tigers to the summit as they took full advantage of Middlesbrough’s 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Dougie Freedman’s side took all three points from the Riverside Stadium with Jamie Ward finding the net 20 minutes from time.

As a result Boro slipped to second but are five points clear of nearest challengers Brighton & Hove Albion, who secured a second successive victory after beating Huddersfield 2-1 at the AMEX Stadium.

With Burnley and Derby County not playing until Monday evening it gave Sheffield Wednesday the opportunity to close the gap on the two sides above them, however they could only draw 1-1 with Reading.

They remain in the Play-Offs, but only on goal difference as Birmingham City, now unbeaten in five league games, recorded a fine 3-0 win over Ipswich Town at St. Andrew’s.

Bolton Wanderers have moved to within a point of Charlton Athletic at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship after defeating Milton Keynes Dons 3-1 at the Macron Stadium.

The Addicks drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers at The Valley while Bristol City - the other side in the bottom three - lost to Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road.

In the early kick-off, televised on Sky Sports, the points were shared at Loftus Road as Queens Park Rangers drew 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers. James Henry equalised for the visitors shortly after the interval with Sebastian Polter opening the scoring after just two minutes.

Elsewhere, Brentford recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale, while Cardiff City drew 2-2 with Rotherham United.

On Monday night, Burnley leaped ahead of opponents Derby County and up to third after an emphatic 4-1 win at Turf Moor. The sides were all square at the break, but the Clarets raced away in the second half through Andre Gray, Sam Vokes and Scott Arfield strikes.
