Middlesbrough won the battle of the top two to extend their lead at the top of the Sky Bet Championship.
The clash with Derby County remained goalless until the 83rd minute, but quickfire efforts from Albert Adomah and George Friend handed Boro the points.The two teams below them were in action on New Year's Day and had contrasting fortunes - Hull City defeated QPR, while Brighton lost at Wolves.

Cardiff inflicted a third successive 1-0 defeat on Blackburn Rovers, while late winners came at home for Birmingham City, Preston North End and Reading.
Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday both picked up wins on the road, at Bolton Wanderers and Fulham respectively, while fellow Yorkshiremen - Leeds United - salvaged a late point at home to MK Dons.
Elsewhere, the spoils were shared between Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest, as well as at Turf Moor between Burnley and Ipswich Town.
