Oxford United recorded a 2-0 success at Millwall in the first leg of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Area Final. And it was largely thanks to Kemar Roofe, who scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season to guide the Yellows to victory.
His first, in the 14th minute, came in bizarre fashion as an attempted cross was misjudged by Millwall goalkeeper David Forde and squirmed in at the near post.
His second, meanwhile, was all about his poaching instinct.
Midfielder John Lundstram rattled the crossbar with a fine effort from distance, and Roofe reacted quickest to follow up and put United firmly in the driving seat ahead of the second leg, which will be played during the first week of February.
In the Northern Area Final first leg, Barnsley and Fleetwood Town battled out a 1-1 draw, leaving that tie firmly in the balance.
